Labor Day at Uncle Lloyd’s House 1993

October 10, 2014 by Lloyd Jr. 6 Comments

I took a lot of VHS tapes from Aunt Jane & Uncle Lloyd’s basement last Christmas. I did a really good job of getting right on editing them too. I had about a dozen reasonably nice videos done by January 6th when school started up again. Then I completely forgot about them. I’ll start adding them to the Photo Friday mix.

I didn’t include all of the footage from these. My idea was to create some fairly short videos that include just the “high lights” of each event. There is a link below the video if you want to see the larger sized version.

Aunt Lolly’s Story (part 6)

September 23, 2013 by Aunt Lolly 12 Comments

Beatrice was always singing and dancing around the kitchen. She liked to imitate Betty Hutton. I was eight_years old and I was walking through the kitchen when all of a sudden a big ole foot landed on top of my head. She was as surprised as I was.

Mother would have a song or poem for every occasion, idea, or word spoken. She was amazing. She taught us to sing. Cleo and I spent many, many, many hours at the sink washing and drying dishes. Cleo liked classical music. There was a program on the radio with that kind of music. I would get so mad at her for having to listen to it. She was always singing. If she sang a song I liked, I would sing with her. If I didn’t like it or if I was mad at her, I would sing off-key just to aggravate her. I discovered that I could make my singing off-key sound pretty, and I tried harder to make it sound good. That was how we began singing in harmony. Cleo sang soprano. I sang alto and when Naomi got older, she sang alto and I sang tenor. We sounded pretty good together. The Johnnie Boys were a country music group that played for our 4-H dances. They also had a radio show every morning on KWOS. We sang with them at one of our 4-H dances, and they invited us to sing with them on the radio. Mother and Daddy took us to Jeff City to the KWOS studios. It was fun.

Things I remember about Theresa & Adolph Sommerer… by Aunt Sis (part 5)

February 4, 2013 by Christina Rowland 3 Comments

Aunt Leona’s son Henry was a young married man in 1940 and Theresa’s sixth child, a boy was 14, each were plowing in fields on either side of the Honey Creek.  (Very happy Christian farmers) Aunt Leona’s son Henry was singing on his side of the Honey Creek (at the top of his lungs) and in GERMAN, “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation.” While Theresa’s son Vernon was singing in English on the other side just as loud, the very same words.  Vernon said he enjoyed those times a lot.

The Marjorie Beck Story (part 2)

April 11, 2011 by Christina Rowland 3 Comments

One beautiful October day I took my shoes off in school.  They were new and probably stiff. Well, when it was time to go home, I couldn’t find one shoe.  I had to have another pair of shoes before it got cold.  We never did find out what happened to my shoe!  I was in the second grade then and Vernon in the first.

For the Christmas Program that year Vernon and I sang “Silent Night.”  Before it was our turn to sing, some of the older boys gave Vernon some gum.  We had a hard time singing as he was so busy chewing the gum.  I remember walking to Holzbierleins to get a bucket of water to drink at school.  I believe one of the other kids went with me as I was so little.  There probably wasn’t much water left by the time we got back to school.

We moved the next spring to the “Fourth Place” which belonged to Relius Beck.  He was living in Jefferson City, I believe.  We walked to Honey Creek to Church and Sunday School.  I think it was about four miles.  We still went to Pleasant Valley to school.

Just a Sample

November 22, 2010 by Lloyd Jr. 18 Comments

In a rather round about fashion, I have a sample from the CD of the Men’s Group at Honey Creek that Danny was telling us about a few weeks ago. I sent an email to Cousin Sam, and he got in touch with his nephews, the *ances, and shortly thereafter Chance Sommerer had a shiny new mp3 in my mailbox that I can share with the rest of you.
