Aunt Bea’s Surgery

June 30, 2020 by Lloyd Jr. 3 Comments

Meredith texted me today and said that her grandma, Bea Putnam, is undergoing colon cancer surgery this morning. Actually, the surgery is probably over by now; it started at 7:30.

Please keep Aunt Bea in your prayers. She will be inpatient for 3-5 days at Boone County Hospital, during which time she will also be impatient. Then rehab starts.

Update:
They couldn’t remove the cancer, but she still had a procedure today and will remain in the hospital. The next step will be a consultation with her oncologist.

Carolyn Jean isn’t doing well.

February 17, 2016 by Aunt Lolly 4 Comments

Aunt Lolly sent this to me yesterday:

David Schlichtmann called this morning to let us know that Carolyn Jean is in St. Mary’s hospital.  She fell at home, and they have been doing all kinds of tests to find out the trouble, but have found none so far.  They think it may be her kidneys, and the cancer. She is in room 310.  I ask David if I could contact you about putting this information on the family web site. He said I could. For now just say(Carolyn Jean is not doing well, and prayers for her are requested.)

I can’t find an address for St. Mary’s hospital, new address, but I know it’s on Mission  Drive,  I’m sure she would enjoy card’s.

Greer is laidup

November 28, 2011 by Julie Baker 5 Comments

This should have been on the website two weeks ago, but it sort of slipped through the cracks (our website has cracks). We saw most of Julie Baker’s family over the weekend while we were at the hospital, and even got to eat lunch with Julie and Greer. We learned that Greer was in a wheel chair, and that Julie had (in addition to pushing him around) send in some information about the whole ordeal that we somehow overlooked. Better late than never, I guess…

A couple weeks ago Greer fell asleep on the comode in the middle of the night and woke up on the floor. On his way down he broke the bone that goes from the knee to the ankle. There are 2 bones there, and  he broke the smaller one down by his ankle. So the next day he drove himself up to the VA hospital in Columbia. They x-rayed it and said it needed to be operated on. They put him in a boot and sent him home. He was able to hobble around pretty good considering.

Wednesday was the operation. He ended up spending the night because the place that gives out walkers and wheel chairs was closed by the time the operation was over. (He went in at 8:30 am and was told he would be the second one in line. Well the Doctor had to be called away for an emergency and they didnt start on him until 2:00 or 2:30.) Nothing to eat or drink after dinner the night before. They let him have 4 crackers since it was taking so long!!!

So now he has a plate and 2 screws in the lower part of his leg. The leg is not to ever touch the ground even for balance. NO weight on it at all. So they sent him home with a traditional walker and crutches. Now either way he has to hop to get around . I am afraid he is going to break the other leg now! I am going to look for a wheel chair for him so he can get around easier. It really takes a lot out of him. Shawn barely got him in the house the day he came home. (makes me wonder about the VA sending an old guy home with a “walker” with instructions not to walk on that leg) He hopped back to bed last night and now back to the living room this morning and thats all he can do. He said it hurts worse now that it is fixed than when he was walking on it when it was broken!

He was room mates with and interesting fellow. The man was with Pattons 3rd army in WW2. He shook hands with Patton and Montgomery. He is 93 years old. He had 2 Sherman tanks blown out from under him and is lucky to be alive. He was in because he burned himself on his wood stove. He had lots of visitors and was going home the same day Greer was.

Julie has since found a wheelchair for Greer, and I can report that Greer is his usual chipper self. Please add swift healing for Greer’s foot to your prayer list. It hasn’t been a good month for the Sommerer family.

Sarah Jones Hospitalized

October 15, 2010 by Lloyd Jr. 6 Comments

Julie just wrote in that her daughter Sarah Jones was admitted to the hospital:

Please pray for our little Sarah. She went to the emergency room last night with stomach pain. They did a CAT scan and found out her appendix is inflamed and has a rupture and is leaking. They will be doing surgery this morning sometime.

Brenna Butler is in the hospital

October 3, 2010 by Lloyd Jr. 7 Comments

Brenna Butler went into the hospital last week and was eventually diagnosed with a kidney infection. Since then it looks like she has come down with pneumonia. Please keep her in your prayers.

If anyone can supply some more information, that would be great.

Hospitals and Dolls… Aunt Naomi

September 3, 2010 by Lloyd Jr. 7 Comments

When I started school, (I started early – maybe 5) I was sick a lot with tonsillitis a lot. Another early memory is of going to St. Mary’s Hospital and the Sister telling me she was going to take me to the “perfume” room that was probably ether.

The perfume room was the operating room and after my tonsils were taken out, I got my first doll that I can remember (I had a brown bear before that) This is the little rubber doll in the basement in the cradle with damaged arm & leg. I don’t know what ever became of the bear. That doll suffered through a lot with an owner determined to have a doll with hair. I painted her hair area black to give the effect to more hair. When I decided that I wanted her to have real hair like dolls I had seen in Sears Catalog, I cut my hair and glued it onto her head. It actually did not look too bad either. There are remnants of glue on her head now, poor thing. She’s been through a lot, because later I painted hair on her again.
