Aunt Naomi’s Story (Part 25)
Joan Shipman was a breath of fresh air to Oak Grove. She had a time each day that she set aside to just read stories to the students. It was during her year of teaching that Ina Golden and I decided to write (I don’t remember what we wrote) in red nail polish on the back of the girl’s outhouse. I believe I had to write 500 times “I will not write on school property.” Joan took us on nature walks and introduced many novel ideas, in her teaching. She was probably the reason I decided I wanted to be a teacher. She later taught music at Eugene High School where I attended, and there I had her for my music teacher.
It was from Oak Grove School that I did my first really daring adventure type thing in my life. My friend Esther Golden and I decided to get off the school bus on Deer Run road (at that time it did not have a name that I know of) and walk through the woods to her home and then she would ride me home on her bicycle. We were sure it would be just straight across. It took a lot longer than we expected and by the time I got home that evening, it was getting dark and I was met at the gate with a sound switching (which I knew I deserved) for causing so much worry.

Uncle Vernon’s Story (part 9)
When we moved from Schubert to Honey Creek, we hired a truck for $2.00 a load to move us. I don’t remember how many loads there were, probably three or four, but the last thing was the wagon, a small load of equipment and me to drive it to Honey Creek. I was 13 then. When I was going through Wardsville, dogs from Schrimpf’s farm came out barking at the mules and they were really spooked. We moved on March 15, 1940. The days were pretty long, so I got to Honey Creek before it got dark. While at Schubert, Daddy purchased the ‘32 Buick from Heisinger’s that was quite a step up for a family that had used a model T-Ford. While at Schubert there were many Roosevelt projects designed to help poor people. One was the Farm Credit Administration. They made loans to help people that lost everything and poor to get started again. We got $500 and from that we got a bull, a cow, 3 heifers, 10 ewes and a buck, a sow, a pressure choker and lots of canning jars. When Lolly was born, she had trouble with milk and Dr. Hill said to get a goat and give her goat milk. We would keep the goat on a long chain in the yard or the chicken yard and when Lolly got hungry, there was always some nice warm milk nearby.
Uncle Ralph plays with the Homestead Pickers
After a somewhat truncated Sommerer Family February Get-together, most of us retired into Jefferson City to attend a fund raiser for Calvary Lutheran High School. Uncle Ralph Sommerer organized the event with performances by the Rowden Review and the Homestead Pickers. They played Blue-Grass and Old-Timely music, and both groups were really entertaining. It was a great event. I’d guess about 500 people attended. The Homestead Pickers play at Silver Dollar City, and Uncle Ralph and Aunt Lolly have been watching them for years. They invited Uncle Ralph up on stage to help with one of the numbers. Luckily, Lauren caught it all on tape.
Danny Sommerer and his sons, Lance and Chance, helped behind the scenes, and although Sam Sommerer served as MC, his dad had the best line of the night: When the Homestead Pickers asked Uncle Ralph what his hat said he replied, “It doesn’t say anything. It just has letters on it.”
