Christmas at East Union there was a lovely tree, a gift exchange and home made fudge by Miss Maynes who married Ben Westerman. They were an adorable couple and had a darling daughter that we got to meet once when she was very young, 2 or 3. We sang Christmas carols and some time had little story plays. When I was un-school age 41/2 Theresa & Adolph made me go up on the stage in my snow white dress with large red satin puff bows on my shoulders and Mary Jane black patten leather slippers. I had to say, “I have roses on my shoulders, slippers on my feet, I am Daddy’s Dutch Girl, don’t you think I’m sweet?” I was glad when that was over, I never became a star.

Jane Putnam sent this in. I don’t have any more details, so anyone with some knowledge could fill us in. I don’t even know what OT and PT are.
Prayers needed for a successful and speedy healing for Matt Putnam. He is undergoing OT and PT for post concussive syndrome.
The Trap Door….by Aunt Sis
In the celing of the upstairs hall was a trap door. Sometimes it would not be completely closed around December and we were sure Santa was up there preparing our Christmas, as there was a window up there that rought in the light of the evening sun and we were sure some on was up there and we decided it must be Santa. The thought alone made us a happy group of little folks. We must be good and mind our parents. This hall lead to an unfinished room we called, “up above the kitchen,” it too held magic. There were many old wonderful things stored from Adolph’s childhood to Theresa’s Childhood. Adolph was 23 when he married Theresa 18 years of age, when Theresa heard us in this room, she would quickly call us to come down stairs and leave those treasures as the were! SAFE!

The Games We Played……
- What kind of games did you play growing up?
What does Sommerer mean?
I’m not going to pretend to be an expert on names, but I do speak a little German, and the internet is full of interesting information. Most of you probably know that “Sommer” is German for “Summer”. So far, so good, but why would you call someone that?
This Website points out that adding an extra “er” on to a German word signified one of two things. Either it was appended to a place name (a city, town, castle or geographical feature) to indicate that you were from that place or it was appended to indicate an occupation:
Surnames which are derived from a trade, profession, or occupation, or some product or tool distinctly associated with a particular craft, for example: Amtsmann (official), Bauer (farmer/peasant), Beck/Becker (bake/baker), Deck/Decker (roof/roofer), Ferderer/Föderer (plaintiff), Fitterer (feeder/provides fodder), Germann (spear + man), Hellmann (warrior), Kessel (kettle), Koch (cook), Nagel (nail/peg), Schröder (tailor), Zander (Alexander/tooth extractor), Zentner (tithe/tax collector), Zimmermann (carpenter/finish carpenter), etc.
It goes on to point out that the double “erer” ending could indicate someone who was apprenticed to someone from a certain place or trade.
This Website actually jumps right to the meaning of Sommerer:
German (Austria): variant of Sommer, a nickname for a summer tenant or a worker hired for the summer.
But I don’t know how reliable that is. It is the internet.
