During the summer months, when we came in the house at noon for dinner, Mother and Daddy always laid down for a nap. That was our time to play. Naomi and I usually had a play house built somewhere and ran off to it. Sometimes Mahlon would take us to the creek that was 1/2 mile away and we went swimming. We had to wait till they were asleep though, because Mother didn’t want us down at the waterfall. She was afraid we would drown.
One of the fun things we did, when it rained, and we couldn’t work, Mahlon, Cleo, Naomi, Lloyd and I would run to the barn to play in the hay loft. (Before we started bailing the hay.) It was like a huge soft pillow to play in. Mahlon would bring a half-gallon of_peaches or pickles along and we lay in the hay listening to it rain on the roof, eating our goodies and looking for new kittens.
When the wheat and oats were harvested, we would play in it. You could make chewing gum by chewing on a mouth full of wheat. We would ‘swim? in the wheat, or pretend to.

And do you remember the pigeons in the barn? Didn’t we cook one in our little play aluminum roaster? Thanks for the fun memories. I wish I could climb that ladder up to the hay loft just one more time!

How long did they nap? I always heard Mexicans took siesta. Maybe we have some Mexican in us too!!

Kittens are especially cuddly in a hay loft.
