In the hope of getting some additional audience participation on the site, we will be posting some open questions. These questions aren’t just for the Aunts & Uncles generation, but for everyone in the family…..
We all think that we know everything about each other, but I bet there are lots of things that either no one knows, or like me, they have forgotten……
Here we go:
- What is your full name? Why did your parents select this name for you? Did you have a nickname?
Christina Rowland says
Christina Marie Rowland……I don’t know why my parents named me Christina because neither of them like it when my friends call me Chris! LOL! Most of my family calls me Tina.
Jane says
The Christina came about because I loved the name. Marie went better with it than Maria. Marie is also Aunt Cleo’s name. Christina was to long a name for such a little girl so we shortened it to Tina. Later when we wanted to call you Christina you would have no part of it. You were our little Tina.
Julie Baker says
Julie Raina
My first name was going to be Susan but Aunt Lilly had already had her heart set on that name for her daughter someday. So my mom’s next choice was Julie. I think I was named after Aunt Julia. I think that is Margaret Julianna Ehrhardt one of grandma’s sisters.
My middle name is after Prince Rainier of Monaco. He had married Grace Kelly about a year before I was born and it was such a fairytale it was all over the media. So she liked the sound of his name so she gave it to me as my middle name. She didn’t know exactly how to spell it…but she got close enough!
Christina Rowland says
Is Aunt Lilly, Aunt Lillian? If yes, why didn’t she name either of her girls Susan? If not, who is Aunt Lilly?
Julie Baker says
Sorry for the confusion. Auto correct on my phone changed Lolly to Lilly.
Anne Miller says
Anne Michelle (Williams) Miller-
I was named after my maternal grandmother (Anne Pierce) and my mom (Linda Anne).
Dad and Mom had some trouble selecting a middle name; Dad chose “Michelle” after hearing the Beatles song on the radio.
Most of the Sommerers call me Anne Michelle, except The Aunts who call me either Anna, Anna Michelle or Little Elizabeth.
Christina Rowland says
I can see why they call you Little Elizabeth….you look a lot like Aunt Elizabeth….she was so pretty!
Heidi says
Hey Lloyd Jr. tell us where you got your name from.
Jane says
Can anyone guess which uncles Lloyd Jr got his name from??
Julie says
His full name if I remember is Lloyd Justin Theadore Sommerer Jr. Is that right?
Christina Rowland says
Yes, that is correct! Uncle Justin and Uncle Theodore were my dad’s Godfather’s. I don’t know where the Lloyd fit into the equation!
Lloyd Jr. says
Yeah, where did Grandma & Grandpa get those names from. I think our aunts and uncles have the most interesting collection of names, and as far as I know they were not named after any relatives.
I think I was in second grade before I could spell my whole name.
greer says
My first name is my mother’s maiden name. My middle name Garth is after an uncle.
Julie Baker says
Uncle Bud was named after his mothers maiden name “Ehrhardt”. What is his full name anyway? I know grandma refers to him as Buddy in h.r diary. Was Bud a nickname only or is it his middle name???
Must have been tradition to give the first born son the mothers maiden name?
Aunt Lolly says
My full name is Theresa Loyola (Sommerer), Sommerer. I was named for mother, and a friend of hers who was named Loyola. I have always hated my name, because no one can pronounce it. What a thorn in the flesh to have to repeat your name over and over for someone. I was told that Naomi couldn’t pronounce Loyola and it came out sounding like Lolly so that is what they called me, and you would be surprised at how many people can’t pronounce Lolly. I think Bud’s middle name was Mathias after Daddy’s father.
Lloyd Jr. says
Aunt Lolly and Aunt Naomi, where did you get your boy’s names from?
Naomi Vetter says
The Vetter kid’s first names were just all favorites of ours. However, when we got our 5th boy I had run out of boys names and Phil wanted to name him Darren, so we liked that just fine. All the children’s second names were taken from their sponsor’s names: Gregory Ronald (Louie’s brother) Philip Thomas (Louie’s cousin) Vincent Anthony (Louie’s brother-in-law) Derrick Richard (Louie’s brother-in-law) Tracy Marie (Louie’s Aunt) Darren Richard (Louie’s brother-in-law) Tiffany Ann (Louie’s neice). I don’t know where Mom & Daddy got my name, but I didn’t like it until about 20 years ago. I always liked my middle name better (Joan). The one thing I did like about my first name when I was little was the way Johnny pronounced it when they would come home from DC in the summer. He pronounced it Nee-a-maa, accent on Nee. (eastern accent).
Aunt Lolly says
Our boy’s names were taken from the Bible. I wanted them to have names they could be proud of. Their middle names were names that went well with the first name, and I thought they could use as first names if they didn’t like the one we gave them. Daniel Keith, David Michael, Douglas John, (keeping with the D’s we switched Doug’s from John Douglas to Douglas John) Samuel Eric, Steven Lance, and Shawn Matthew. We did the same with Shawn’s name. (turned it around) They had to follow in the footsteps of great christian men.
