Uncle Felix hauled the walnuts that Aaron and Andrew picked up. The boys are proudly displaying their checks. What did you get for walnuts? What year was that?
I hope we have a lot this year. I enjoyed picking them up and having them shelled at Lohman and then picking some out for Christmas baking last year. When we were kids we picked out a big dishpan full and sold them to Central Diary for their walnut ice cream. I think we got money to purchase school supplies. Maybe Lolly remembers how much money we got. It took a long time to pick them out but there were a lot of us picking. I don’t remember ever selling them in the shell when we were at home.
I don’t remember ever getting any of the walnut money, but I do remember the big dish pans of walnuts we picked out. I got sick one year on walnuts, Mother told me not to eat the scraps that she sifted out of the larger pieces, but I ate them anyway, and never ate another walnut until just recently, but I broke out in hives again. One should always listen to their mother, I guess.
I have a question…is it the husk or the shell that is used for airplane engine cleaning? I think the shell would be more abrasive than the husk, but I don’t know. I think the husk had medicinal purposes in olden days and maybe used in furniture stain.

These three guys are adorable!! I don’t remember Felix having a truck! Is it Lloyd’s?
Steve says
do walnuts even make enough money for people to bother with? that was a great income as a kid.
Aaron says
The husk of the walnut is used to clean airplane engines. So the husk is worth more than the nut.
Lloyd Jr. says
I had no idea that was the case. Interesting.

Lloyd asked where you got the hives at? His tongue gets prickly when he eats them. He doesn’t eat them now.

Scrapping from walnut bark would stop blood flow.

I like this picture. They worked hard for the money and Uncle Felix was good to take them.
