Great Grandpa Sommerer… by Uncle Mahlon

September 29, 2010 by Christina Rowland 4 Comments

This is Mahlon Sommerer and I now take pen in hand to give you an account.  It may be fiction or it may be fact but it comes from Mahlon’s almanac.  Here’s some of my earliest recollection of life in the Sommerer Clan.

The earliest I can remember was when I was just over two years old.  It was 1934 and we lived at Shubert’s.  I was in a west bedroom with Grandpa Sommerer.  This was my grandpa, my father’s father.  he was whittling out axe handles.  I was trying to get him to play ring around the rosy with me.  I must have been pestering him for most of half an hour.  I remember several times asking him to play ring around the rosy and he kept saying he had to get his axe handle made.

Then the next thing I remember was Mom and I was standing at a window or door looking toward Shuberts watching the cars going up the road and out of sight.  That was Grandpa’s funeral procession going up the hill to where they buried him. So that is one of the few memories I have of Mom and I look back she was probably pregnant with Cleo or Lolly and that’s why she didn’t go to the funeral.  Grandpa died on March 10 and Cleo was born on the 15th in 1935.

Gas Rationing… by Uncle Mahlon

September 2, 2010 by Christina Rowland 2 Comments

Then somewhere along this period (second World War) Dad and I was over south of the house, across the creek, up on that ridge.  The first ridge.  We was building a turkey house.  We had turkeys and he wanted to keep them away from the chickens so they wouldn’t get infected.  You couldn’t raise chickens and turkeys together.  While we were there and a phone call came in and Mom hollered at us to come over real quick that Uncle Herbert was found.  He was in a hospital in St. Louis with a stroke.  So I remember we came back and Dad and Aunt Dora and a bunch of them got together and they decided that they had to go down.  So each one of them had to put in to get enough gas rationing stamps to drive to St. Louis to see their brother that  they hadn’t seen for upteen years.  he had disappeared from home.  So they had quite a deal to get enough gas to get there.

Adolph, Theresa and The Twelve

I have a confession to make. I’ve had this better copy of this picture ready to put on the website for over two years. But I told Sam that I wouldn’t put up the version with Aunt Lolly on it until he made his first comment on the website.

That happened last week, so I guess I’d better hold up my end of the bargain as well. Isn’t this a nice picture? You can see the old version here if you’ve forgotten what it looked like already.

So, when was this taken? What was the occasion?
