Aunt Lolly’s Story (part 4)
When Mahlon was home, we always had meat to eat. He hunted and set traps. One time, I got my hand caught in one of his traps. Cleo had a hard time getting me out of it. After Mahlon went to the Air Force, there were times when we didn’t have meat. One fall, it was warm. Usually the folks butchered something when it got cold enough to let the meat hang in the smoke house. (We didn’t have a deep freeze yet.) Thanksgiving Day came and we didn’t have any meat to eat. Our car must have been broken down because I don’t remember going to church. None of our sisters or brothers were coming home. It was a miserable and depressing Thanksgiving Day. I was playing in the yard when the cat chased a rabbit out of the flower bush. It ran across the yard, the cat in pursuit. They both ran down the cellar steps. I ran over and closed the cellar door, ran in the house, and told Mother about the rabbit. She went down in the cellar and came back with the rabbit. We had meat for dinner!! –which I was very thankful for, but the cat wasn’t too happy I guess.
