Great Grandpa Sommerer… by Uncle Mahlon

September 29, 2010 by Christina Rowland 4 Comments

This is Mahlon Sommerer and I now take pen in hand to give you an account.  It may be fiction or it may be fact but it comes from Mahlon’s almanac.  Here’s some of my earliest recollection of life in the Sommerer Clan.

The earliest I can remember was when I was just over two years old.  It was 1934 and we lived at Shubert’s.  I was in a west bedroom with Grandpa Sommerer.  This was my grandpa, my father’s father.  he was whittling out axe handles.  I was trying to get him to play ring around the rosy with me.  I must have been pestering him for most of half an hour.  I remember several times asking him to play ring around the rosy and he kept saying he had to get his axe handle made.

Then the next thing I remember was Mom and I was standing at a window or door looking toward Shuberts watching the cars going up the road and out of sight.  That was Grandpa’s funeral procession going up the hill to where they buried him. So that is one of the few memories I have of Mom and I look back she was probably pregnant with Cleo or Lolly and that’s why she didn’t go to the funeral.  Grandpa died on March 10 and Cleo was born on the 15th in 1935.

September 28, 2010 by Jane Sommerer 16 Comments

On April 22, 1890 Johann Mathias Sommerer, Jr and Elisabeth Albrect (Grandpa’s Mom and Dad) were married. This was Johann Mathias’ second marriage.  His first wife, Leona Ehrhardt died 5 months earlier.

The picture of Grandpa’s father and mother came from Pearl Ehrhardt Carrender.  She was kind enough to let me copy it this past spring.

Things I Remember Fondly… by Aunt Sis (part 1)

August 11, 2010 by Christina Rowland 3 Comments

Here are some memories from Aunt Sis…

Grandpa & Grandma Erhardt’s, Mother’s Day Gathering the twin snowball bushes by the garden gate always were in full bloom and Grandma would let us grandchildren have a snowball fight.  Not a bloom was left on the bush and the ground was white as snow, in May.

After dinner Grandpa Edwin and Dad (Adolph) would set out on the banister on the front porch and talk of many things, mostly in German.  One thing Grandpa Edwin said I’ll always remember (it was in English), “They say pepper helps a man on his horse, and a woman to her grave.”  I was about 7 and thought it was funny, but they didn’t laugh and I’ve wondered about the truth in that all these years!
