One summer while the older family members were making hay with the team of horses and wagon, when Naomi and I were little, we got the bright idea of hauling in our own load of hay. We filled our Radio Flyer wagon with hay, stomped it down, and hitched our dog “Bertie” to the wagon. That dog would not help us. She just laid down. Well that was another big disappointment in our life. We had to pull the wagon ourselves.

Aunt Lolly’s Story (part 12)
One Halloween, our car was broken down. We had a 4-H Halloween party at Oak Grove. We got dressed up in our costumes. Mother and Daddy went-with us. We walked by lantern light to Oak Grove. When we got there, no one could guess who we were because we came out of the woods and had no car to give us away. I will always remember that beautiful walk through the woods late that night. It was spooky and exciting with a big moon and millions of stars shining, and Mother and Daddy to keep us safe.
Aunt Lolly’s Story (part 11)
When I was small, I spent many hours sitting on Daddy’s lap combing his hair. He had lots of patience and endured a lot. He taught us to play blind pitch, and then regular pitch. He played the harmonica and I played my drum sitting by the old wood stove in the wintertime.
On cold winter weekend nights, we would run upstairs where the peanuts and popcorn were laid out to dry on papers on the floor, dip up a big pan of peanuts and grab ears of popcorn and take them to the kitchen. We put the peanuts in the oven to bake and shelled the popcorn. We would pop a big dishpan of popcorn. Then Mahlon, Cleo, Naomi and I would play cards or Monopoly till midnight.
Aunt Lolly’s Story (part 10)
Christmases at our house were so wonderful. We would go to Christmas Eve services at Honey Creek. We would each receive a big bag of candy and an orange. When we got home, Santa had been there. The front room would have a beautiful big cedar tree all decorated, with gifts stacked 3 & 4 feet deep all around the tree. We would get so many wonderful things for Christmas because we had these wonderful brothers and sisters who sacrificed to make sure we had a good Christmas. We also had big crates of oranges, grapefruits and apples to eat. What a treat that was.
