When Naomi and I were in high school, Cleo gave us each a beautiful expensive skirt and sweater for Christmas. One spring morning, I asked Naomi if I could wear hers to school. She finally agreed. I loved the color. It was pink and gray with pleats all around and the sweater was pink. After milking the cows and getting ready for school, I was running late and had to walk and run the 1/2 mile to catch the bus. It had rained hard during the night and the road had two-foot deep ruts in it from the milk truck. I was trying to get around them and my feet slipped in the mud and I fell flat on my face in the mud and water. I never was so sick in my life. My sister’s beautiful outfit was covered with mud! I just walked back home and I missed school that day. The dry cleaners were able to get it clean, but they ironed out all the pleats. I am reminded of the old saying “Into each life some rain must fall”. It poured on me that day. Ha!

I wish I knew what ever happened to that skirt and sweater. I must have outgrown it and it was put into a quilt…or maybe passed on to someone in the family. What color was your skirt and sweater, Lolly? I can’t remember. It’s amazing the milk truck could get down our road. I remember riding to Jefferson City a few times on the milk truck. It was for dental appointments. I would get on the bus after the appointment (it was on Madison St.) and the bus took me to Brazito. I guess Daddy came to Brazito to pick me up. I don’t ever remember walking home from there.

The milk truck had two giant tires on each side in the back, which is one way Irvine could make it down our road. The milk truck had a lot of weight on it too, that must have helped. It sure was nice of him to take us along with him. He was a sweetie. He came every morning at 6;30, boy that was tough getting all those cows milked by then. I still have the skirt, but not the sweater, Cleo gave me. I wore it for many years. It was charcoal in color with tiny specks of red, black and some other lighter colors, The short sleeve sweater was a dark burnt red. The skirt had pleats all around, and it was more like a heavy polyester, and wool material. I don’t think the pleats could have been ironed out of mine. They were very expensive outfits. That was a terrible thing to have happen to you.
