On March 15, 1940 we moved from Schubert’s to Honey Creek on Selma Erhardt’s farm. We paid the man that moved us $2.00 per load. There were quite a few loads, farm equipment, cattle, wood stoves, etc….. To save $2.00 I drove from Schubert’s to Honey Creek with the wagon, 2 mules, and a small load of farm equipment. I was 13 years old, that’s about 12 miles and four or five hours travel time. That was and experience for me, I will always remember.

I remember when I was 13 or 14 driving the tractor and hay baler from grandma’s to Kermit Sommerer’s farm. I felt very old and responsible. Dad drove behind me the whole way in the truck.

I wonder if it would be legal now-a-day for a 14 year old to drive a tractor on a public road? I wonder if it was then? You were very brave.
Jane says
I don’t remember that. Maybe I knew and forgot. You were always pretty responsible, though. I do remember your being with Dad at Kermit’s when he baled.
