For Christmas that year I got a small wash tub and a wash board. A week later I got a baby brother. He was baptized Mahlon Lee Otto Henry Sommerer.
He was a dear chubby little fellow. I took care of him most of the time. He was still small when we moved to the “Fifth Place” at Schubert, eight miles east of Jefferson City. It was a big house and I loved it. It was so nice.
This is where Cleopha was born right before my tenth birthday. I made her gowns and hemmed her diapers. I was nine years old then. She was our Shirley Temple. She was cute and had such pretty hair.
A couple of years later Theresa Loyola was born. She was a chubby little doll. I sewed for her too.

I wonder if my parents were poorer when they lived at (No.4 place The Relius Beck farm or No.6 place, at Selma Erhardt house at Honey creek). They were both very small compared to the place at Schubert. Where did everyone sleep? I want to comment on one of the pictures Christina put on here for us. The second picture show’s the 2 sets of twins in our family. That is so nice to see them together.
Christina says
Lance and Chance left too soon to be in the picture….

Margie sewed so much for all of us, that ol’ Sew and Sew! I love her!! Cleo, I didn’t see that photo. I have to look again. Was it Chance/Lance,Leann/Thomas or Lake/Lane? It is so neat to have that many twins in a family of around 190+ living & dead of us. Has anyone ever counted exactly how many we are including the deceased?
cleo says
I’m sorry, I forgot there are 3 sets of twins. they are now the first picture of the first 6 that Christina just put on here. Thomas and Lea Ann Meisinger holding Lane and Lake Cary.Sorry Lance and Chance.
Christina says
Pete and I counted 34 first cousins Friday night.
cleo says
I didn’t know there were any deceased twins in our family.
Naomi Vetter says
Okay. I found the answer on this fab website. It is around 230!
Christina Rowland says
That means we had less than 1/2 in the photo this year…..grand total was 103.
Mahlon says
And 41 of those were mine! I sure did my share. 20 were Lolly’s…somebody is slipping when it comes to attendance.
Everyone enjoyed the ones that were there. And thanks for taking the pictures, Christina.
Lloyd Jr. says
I’m going with percentage over numbers. My dad had 90% in attendance. Beat that!
Aunt Lolly says
I can’t imagine how sad I would have been to get a wash tub and wash board for a Christmas present at the age of 8 years, and then to have to use it to wash baby diapers!!! Margie you were a saint! We all owe you so much. You were an inspiration to us all. Thank you Margie and Bea for washing my diapers! and for loving me.
Julie Baker says
ditto.”I can’t imagine how sad I would have been to get a wash tub and wash board for a Christmas present at the age of 8 years, and then to have to use it to wash baby diapers!!! “
Naomi Vetter says
And Margie, thank you for saving my life and thank you Bea for teaching me to tell time and thank you Mahlon for helping me learn my Roman numerals.
Julie Baker says
what trick did he use to help you learn roman numerals? Do you remember?
Mahlon says
He learned them from the clock that stood above the kitchen sink.
Naomi Vetter says
No, I don’ remember and I don’t remember any of the Roman numerals either except for a few. I just remember his patience with me and his giving of his time to help me. I’m sure he would have liked to be doing other things.
